Sapphire was custumarily worn around the necks of royalty as a shield against poison and harm. In medieval times, sapphire was the preferred stone for decorating chrch officials: it was believed to facilitate the connection with the divine or the spirit world.
The Ten Commandments given to Moses in the Christian Bible were also said to have been carved on tablets of sapphire.
